Ecuador Quito Guayasamin 1-05 Capilla del Hombre Rostros de America Paintings [10 of 11]
When Ecuador's most famous contemporary artist Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999) died, he was building Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of Man), a chapel dedicated to humanity and one of the most important works of art in South America. The two-storied gallery is a memorial to the suffering of the oppressed and victims of war and torture, and a celebration of Latin American identity and the positive aspects of human nature. To the left of the main entrance are a series of colourful paintings called Rostros de America (1997-9)
